Montenegro Travel Guide: Kotor, Budva, the Mountains and Getting Around
Montenegro combines old coastal towns with mountain scenery, but a small country does not always mean a quick journey. For a first visit, choose a coastal base and add an inland stay only if you have enough time to enjoy both.
Choose your base
| Base | What to plan around |
|---|---|
| Kotor and the bay | Old-town walks, waterfront time and a visit to Perast |
| Budva | The old town, beaches and a coastal holiday |
| Žabljak | A separate mountain stay for Durmitor, with weather-dependent activities |
Kotor and Budva suit different holidays: choose the bay for historic streets and views, or Budva for a beach-focused base. Keep Durmitor as a separate part of the itinerary rather than squeezing it between coastal stops.
Getting there and travelling between places
Compare flights to Tivat and Podgorica against the location of your accommodation. If you are coming by road from Kosovo or Albania, confirm the full route, border requirements and arrival point before booking. Leave a buffer between a cross-border journey and a flight.
For buses, check the operator's current departure point, days of operation and return service. A rental car can help with a varied itinerary, but check parking at your accommodation and allow time for winding roads. If sharing a ride, agree on luggage and the exact pickup point in advance.
A suggested five-day trip
- Days 1–2: settle in Kotor, explore the old town and leave time for the bay.
- Day 3: choose Perast or a day around Budva instead of trying to cover every coastal town.
- Days 4–5: add Žabljak and Durmitor if transport and weather suit; otherwise enjoy two slower coastal days.
For a short weekend, stay on the coast. For a longer trip, give the mountain section its own nights and check local conditions before setting out.
Money, mobile data and useful preparation
Montenegro uses the euro. Keep cash for small purchases and check payment options before a boat trip or excursion. Save your accommodation address and maps offline, especially before heading inland.
Check whether your phone plan includes Montenegro; a regional package name alone is not a coverage list. Compare the current Montenegro eSIM plans and follow our installation guide. If your trip also includes Albania, read getting around Albania.
